What is ADAS calibration and when is it needed?
ADAS calibration (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is the technical procedure that realigns the cameras, radar and lidar sensors of driver-assistance systems after a windscreen replacement or a frontal impact. Without calibration, functions such as automatic emergency braking, lane keeping and traffic-sign recognition operate from the wrong position, reducing safety. Calibration must be carried out every time the windscreen is replaced on ADAS-equipped vehicles, in line with the manufacturer's specifications.
Is the windscreen excess always payable?
No, glass damage is often covered by the policy with no excess for the customer, because many insurers include a specific "glass cover" with zero or very low excess. It depends on the policy you hold. When we open the claim with your insurer we check directly what the contract provides and tell you before the work whether there will be any cost to you.
Can a chip be repaired, or does the windscreen need replacing?
A chip can be repaired with optical resin if: it is smaller than a 2-euro coin, it is not in the driver's direct field of vision and it has not produced extensive cracks. In these cases the work takes about 30 minutes, avoids replacing the glass and restores the structural strength of the windscreen. If the chip is larger, branched or in the field of vision, replacing the windscreen is mandatory for safety and type approval.
How long does a windscreen replacement take?
The replacement itself takes about 1-2 hours, but the vehicle must remain in the workshop for a further 4-6 hours while the structural adhesive cures before it can be driven safely. If ADAS calibration is required, add 1-2 hours. On average we hand the car back the same day or within 24-48 hours of starting the work.
Do you use original glass?
We work both with original glass (the vehicle manufacturer's brand) and with "approved equivalent" glass, which is produced by the same glassworks that supply the car makers but sold under their own brand. Both meet the original-equipment standards for safety and optical quality. The choice depends on the insurance policy and on availability: we tell you clearly before the work begins.
